Moving Tone’s evening of serious frivolity

Sick of the ‘same old, same old’? Bored of marching to the same beat, or singing from the same hymn sheet?

If you’re looking for something fresh, unpredictable and utterly unique, September’s Moving Tone Session, focusing on new and experimental music, promises an evening of genuine surprises for everyone – even the performers.

Taking part are Cambridge composer and pianist Caroline Wright, fresh from completing her Masters in Composition in London, and vocalist Anne L Ryan, a well-known name on the Cambridge acoustic scene, whose own style is highly influenced by the Irish Sean-Nos tradition. They will be joined by special guests from the Oxford Improvisers Co-op – Pete McPhail (sax and flute), Alexander Hawkins (piano and percussion) and Dominic Lash (bass) – for a tantalising evening of new music.

Most pieces in the evening’s programme – which consists entirely of original compositions or arrangements by the principal performers – are having only their second or third appearance on a concert platform, while others have never been performed before. Some of it is so new, in fact, that it hasn’t even happened yet; since improvisation, spontaneity and the occasional outbreak of anarchic humour are key elements of the pieces, not even the performers know for certain quite what’s going to happen. The only way to find out is to be there. Just expect great singing, great playing, and for music to crop up in some highly unlikely places. ‘One of the great things about music is that it is full of contradictions,’ says Anne. ‘These sessions set out to show that music can be “serious” without sacrificing its sense of fun and frivolity. To put a bit of the spontaneity back in live music...’

Pieces in the programme will include an affectionate deconstruction of Chopin, a piece for piano and other instruments by young composer Tom Wilson, entitled Two Rooms (in which the musicians play in two different rooms), and Contagion, an experimental piece by Anne L Ryan in which the music literally spreads like a virus. Innoculations will not be required – though it may give a whole new meaning to the term ‘catchy’.
